COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This useful, interesting course helps you communicate more successfully in relationships at home, work, or anywhere else. It’s wonderful! You will study the dynamics of interaction between persons in specific contexts of information exchanges, and it will improve your interpersonal skills. You will learn much about the process of communication and yourself. Using media, activities, lectures, and communication models, emphasis will be on process, culture, self-concept, perception, verbal and nonverbal factors, language, listening, emotions, relational factors, climates, conflict resolution, and interpersonal contexts.
STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES:
As a result of completing this course, students will be able to:
1. Identify quantitative and qualitative definitions of interpersonal
communication
2. Assess the influence of self-concept upon communication
3. Analyze the process of perception
4. Recognize the symbolic nature of language
5. Analyze methods of effective listening styles
REQUIRED:
If you take this class, you agree to everything in this syllabus and the reading schedule! If you don‘t agree, please don’t take this class.
▪ Text: (Adler, et al) INTERPLAY, 12th ed. Oxford University Press
▪ Three Scantron sheets (888), two #2 pencils, and a better eraser
than the one on a pencil (because smudges can hurt grades)
▪ Blue or black ink for classwork on white, lined, straight-edged paper,
8 ½ X 11; (recycled white is fine)
▪ Homework not on a worksheet is typed; use campus computers if
you don't have one.
▪ A 3-ring binder to keep notes/handouts (can also use for other
classes). (Students who use divider tabs for class stay more
organized and find studying easier. Use them for each chapter.
▪ One 8 ½ X 11 heavy paper for Identity Shield, white or recycled white
only. Color helps us see your Shield. Borrow or buy 2 markers or
other color makers for thick lines.
READINGS:
This class and all tests are based on the readings, lectures, media, discussions and activities. Most of the time, 1 chapter is covered per class. Read all chapters BEFORE class meets in order to earn participation points in discussions and to ask questions needed to understand the material. There may be pop quizzes on readings to make sure you read. Reading chapters ahead of time will raise your self-confidence level and make reviewing for tests much easier. You will be able to intelligently participate, adding to our positive definition of you as a communicator. Tests are mainly on the text, so read early to have time to review and do well. A reading schedule is provided.
PARTICIPATION:
Thank you for adding your positive energy by leaving negativity outside. See above dates, & if you are planning to drop, do it in time to avoid an F. Disrespect toward students or teacher will not be tolerated, and school policy of suspension from class will be followed. We all make mistakes; no one is superior; and "Respect All" is our mantra. It is important that you be here, not just to learn but also to keep all points. Yes, listening is part of participation!
Life happens, but be here and focused as much as possible. If you will be absent more than once, let me know in advance if possible. Two absences in a row w/o contacting me are grounds for dropping you, but it is not my responsibility to do it. You lose 4 points each class not here 75% of time, and 2 or 3 points for less than full participation (my choice here). Should you arrive late at all? YES! You need to get the information, but you’ll still lose 2 points. Tardy is after 6:30 PM, early leaving, and any too late return from a break (Discussed in class). If more than 30 min. late, you may lose more. Success depends upon being here fully. See me at Break or after class the day of a tardy to watch me change it from absent to tardy b/c I may not remember who arrived late. You could lose points. Late students have told me they
are glad they come because they don’t fall behind and tests seem easier. Break time(s) discussed in class, but no food or drink in here except water ina clear bottle is school policy. Not a "green" idea, but that's the policy right now.
For optimal success:
1. Get 3 classmates’ names & contact information (phone numbers/
Voice Mails, & E-mail) for missed assignments, added information,
lecture notes, & handouts if absent. No group work is made up. I
do E-mail but I don’t re-lecture this way for this is not an online
course. No late work is accepted in this Late Start class.
2. You will lose points for lack of appropriate educational focus.
Again, DISRESPECT toward students or instructor will not be
tolerated, and school policy will be followed. This may be removal
for day(s) or term, depending on the behavior. Others decide this.
We all make mistakes, no one is superior, and our mantra is
“RESPECT ALL”. Usually, this is not a problem.
3. Exercise sheets will help you pass tests, so hand in when due or
usually no points (my call here). If here, you can participate.
Keep attendance below if wanted, but only my records count.
Class 1___Class 2___Class 3___Class 4___Class 5 ___Class 6 ___Class 7___Class 8____
Class 9___Class10___Class11___Class 12___Class 13___Class 14___Class 15___Class 16___
4. Assigned Worksheets/Activities: To get points, work is done fully
& with correct/appropriate educational focus on the exercise
assigned. Socialize at breaks, please. Activities may require
groups, so they can’t be made up. It's up to each member of a
group to keep members on track so the activity can be experienced
correctly. This college academic class expects you to act like adults,
so keep personal conversations and negative agendas outside of
class. Some humor may be fine, but the work is serious. Make an
appointment with me to discuss anything not on the agenda. A
positive focus is needed to help you share positive insights, succeed,
and get points. We will get to know each other and discuss many
things, so what happens here, stays here unless you break rules or
are negative. It’s a SAFE ZONE; be here for credit!
5. I also look at class discussion for participation points, so be focused.
(70 pts.= 35 for worksheets & 35 for participation w/5 extra if no
absences/tardies AT ALL. “Forgiven” means you did lose some.)
Some no point activities/quizzes for understanding are possible.
TESTS:
Academic honesty is expected of all, and lack of it will cause the appropriate college response. Tests are MOST of your grade, so read the text and pass them. There will be 3 tests, using Scantrons, a #2 pencil, and agood eraser. (If the machine can’t tell which answer you chose, you will probably get it wrong.) It is rare to be allowed to make up a test, so school-approved proof of absences is required. In an emergency, let me know before class. If allowed to be made up, it’s at my convenience and may have a lower grade. (on time=110 pts. each)
►I do not give late finals. Early ones are extreme emergencies, but
vacations are not emergencies. Plan ahead to take tests early. I’m
not here each day, so arrange it at least a week early. Do not tell me
only one class before. College policy is to arrange for another time
and place, and this takes time.
EXERCISES (3):
Worksheets/Activities/Discussions clarify concepts. Most chapters have activities to clarify concepts. Identity Shield=30, Language Ex.= 10, and Self-Disclosure Ex.=10 if on time, directions followed & sharing shows thinking, not copying someone’s sharing response. (50 pts.)
EXTRA CREDIT:
A nonverbal exercise (to be discussed) can receive up to 20 extra points if done correctly. Bringing all materials can get you 5 points if you have them on a surprise check. This only happens once. If no absences or tardies AT ALL, 5 more points are added to participation if you have had correct educational focus and done the work.
EXTRA TIPS:
Paper Identification Format-If done outside class, type it on regular or recycled white paper. If done in class, use lined, 3-hole, 8 ½ X 11” white paper, no torn edges unless perforated for it. Nothing else accepted. Blue or black ink only, except ID Shield. All submitted work follows identification in upper right white space only, in 3 single-spaced lines:
EXAMPLE= 1st line first & last names
2nd line Sp. 121, section #
3rd line Submission Date
Class Zones- We have 3 zones!
First, it is a SAFE ZONE! Leave outside class as much stress as possible and don't create it here either.
Enter with a positive attitude, and communicate in here with tact and“Respect for All”. Your instructor is part of the “ALL”. Usually it doesn't happen, but no verbal or nonverbal language which can be thought of by anyone as insulting, demeaning, or in any way derogatory will be tolerated even if that person or group is not present, for this is a “safe” environment. Any behavior hurting this safety will lose points, and it’s my call, no one else’s. Sarcasm is always unacceptable. You can be removed from class for violating this rule.
Part of safety is knowing what to do if an emergency arises, so if any serious medical problem, privately see me today to let me know and verify it next time in case you might ever need help. This has happened, and I wish I had known about it before paramedics were needed. Your privacy will be respected.
Second, it’s a NO MEDIA/CELL PHONE ZONE! If you are so important you use a phone during class, you should be at the United Nations, solving the world’s problems.
Turn off (and keep off) all electronics before you enter the room. If you leave the room for a call, you are NOT fully participating and may lose points. Decide if you can afford to lose them. <If your significant other-not just any relative or friend- is about to give birth, show the Dr.’s letterhead note with “due date expected …” next week, and if you are called during class to go to the hospital, a picture of you holding the baby in the hospital right after birth will be shown to the class. (We love babies, and we've seen these great pictures before.)
Third, it’s a NO FOOD OR DRINKS ZONE except bottled water in a clear container.
No container if not able to see through or you’ll be asked to put it away. Eat and drink before class, after class, or during breaks. (Not a “green” idea, but this is school policy now.) I get e-mail on this each semester from the administration.
► I believe in you. This is a fast-paced class, but you can do it! Points change on each assignment & test, so keep coming, reading, & working. It is worth 3 units, so don’t give up!
GRADING: Your grade is a percentage of the total possible points. I will round up a .5 to the next number.
405 A= 90% As you get points, put them here! (or on paper)
